Gond kingdom of Garha Mandla Branch, Madhukar Shah, Copper Square 1/2 Paisa, 4.30g, VS 1664, Obv: Lion facing to left, Devanagari legend “Shri Madhukara” around, date 1664 below, Rev: Devanagari legend “…Shri Madhuka / ra Sahi”. Very fine+. Madhukar Shah, the Raj-Gond ruler of Garha-Mandla, dated VS1664. The Gond kingdom was defeated by Akbar in 1564 after a heroic fight by Rani Durgavati who was killed in the murdering Chand Shah. The date on the coin corresponds closely to Akbar's death and it is possible that Madhukar Shah threw off the Mughal authority momentarily, by striking coins in his
