Hijri (AH) ↔ CE converter
⇄
A Hijri year is ~11 days shorter than a solar year, so it usually spans two CE years. Dates use the tabular (civil) calendar — the convention behind published concordance tables; observed dates can differ by a day.
Vikram Samvat & Saka ↔ CE converter
VS − 57 = CE · Saka + 78 = CE. Both years begin in spring (Chaitra), so each spans two CE years. Vikram Samvat appears on princely state coins (and all Nepal issues); the Saka era is used on Indian government issues and documents.
Mughal regnal year (julus) calculator
Regnal years are lunar and counted from accession (RY 1 = accession year), so expected AH ≈ accession + RY − 1. A ±1 year tolerance is normal — mints changed the RY on different dates. Enter both RY and AH to check a coin's date pair for consistency.
Era cheat-sheet for Indian coins
Hijri (AH) — lunar; use the converter above. Sultanate, Mughal, most princely Islamic issues.
Vikram Samvat (VS) — CE ≈ VS − 57. Rajput and Hindu princely states, Nepal.
Saka era — CE = Saka + 78. Republic India official era, some ancient issues.
Fasli era (Deccan/Hyderabad revenue year) — CE ≈ Fasli + 590.
Bengali San (BS) — CE ≈ BS + 593.
Kollam era (Travancore) — CE ≈ KE + 825. Travancore coins are dated in Kollam era.
AH → CE quick table (AH 900–1450)
Sultanate era through today. The CE span is the pair of years the Hijri year touches.
How do I convert an AH year on a coin to CE? Multiply the AH year by 0.970225 and add 621.57 for a quick estimate, or use the converter above for the exact span. Each Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so an AH year usually straddles two CE years — AH 1118, for example, ran from April 1706 to April 1707.
What is a regnal (julus) year on Mughal coins? Most Mughal coins carry two dates: the AH year and the regnal year (RY) counted from the emperor’s accession, written with the word julus. RY 1 is the accession year itself, so AH ≈ accession AH + RY − 1. Comparing the two dates catches misread digits.
How do I convert Vikram Samvat to CE? Subtract 57 from the Samvat year: VS 1869 ≈ 1812 CE. The VS year begins in spring (Chaitra, March–April), so early months of the VS year fall in the following CE year — write it as VS 1869 = 1812–13 CE.
How do I convert a Saka year to CE? Add 78 to the Saka year: Saka 1869 = 1947 CE. The Saka year also begins in spring (around 22 March). Republic India commemorative issues and Indian government documents use the Saka era.
Why do converted dates sometimes differ by one year from a catalogue? Regnal years are lunar and coin dates were applied by mint workers, so published concordances allow ±1 year. The AH–RY consistency check above flags combinations outside that tolerance.
